This short hike explores the old Lapstone Zig Zag Railway, built in the 1860s, and in use until the early 20th century until the Glenbrook Tunnel was completed. The zig zag railway was a compromise, as funds to complete a tunnel at the time of construction were not available to the still young colony of New South Wales. Not withstanding this, John Whitton, the engineer responsible for the construction, built an impressive viaduct to carry the railway line across a deep and narrow gully that not only served its purpose while the railway was in use, but continued its life, reincarnated as the Great Western Highway for more than 80 years.

The viaduct is definitely the highlight of this track, but the other features are interesting in their own right, including the railway zig zag, stone cuttings and Lucasville Station. Highly recommended for train enthusiasts, or those interested in history.
