★★★☆☆
The town of Silverton sprang up in the 1870's after the discovery of lode of silver. Incorporated as a town in 1880, Silverton had a population of up to 3,000 people in its heyday, but quickly declined when the silver played out and the nearby discovery of even richer lodes of silver and zinc in Broken Hill. The town retains a number of historic buildings and is a popular tourist destination. Silverton is easily accessed from the nearby and much larger Broken Hill.
I have visited Silverton twice now, taking the opportunity to walk the streets and read the many interpretive signs that detail the history of this former mining town.
