Darling River Run
Wilcannia, NSW
710.0 km (72 hrs )
★★★☆☆
The Darling River is one of the longest rivers in Australia, with a length of over 1,400 km from its source in northern NSW to its confluence with the Murray River at Wentworth. My friends and I explored the northern reaches of the river on this trip, travelling from Wilcannia in the south to Bourke in the north. Much of this route in outback NSW is on dirt roads, driving which was an adventure in itself.
There is much to see in this remote corner of NSW, from the rough opal mining town of White Cliffs with its underground homes and desert gold course, to the floodplains near Toorale and the historic Toorale Homestead. One of the best things on this trip was the opportunity to take our time and enjoy camping beside the river. Our camping spots at Coach and Horses Campground, Louth and Karnu Yalpa allowed us to enjoy the serenity of the Darling River.
