Mount Kembla Ring Track
Kembla Heights, NSW
5.5 km (1.5 hrs )
★★★☆☆
The Mount Kembla Ring Track explores the lower slopes of Mount Kembla. The track begins with a descent into the rainforest dominated by strands of cabbage palms, before entering the more open woodlands in the north. Following the track in an anti-clockwise direction is easiest, with the climb back up to Mount Kembla Lookout along Cordeaux Road sparing you the stairs that are used to descend into the rainforest.
The area around Mount Kembla is steeped in history, with a number of now discussed coal mines in the area and the site of Australia's worst mining disaster, the 1902 explosion which claimed the lives of 96 men and boys, many of whom are buried at the Windy Gully Cemetery. It was sobering to see just how young many of the mines were that were killed in the disaster.
