Mount Etna Caves National Park with its limestone caves is the roosting site for more than 80 per cent of Australia's breeding population of little bent-wing bats. The caves were once mined for guano, a natural fertiliser, and later for limestone. Evidence of the former mines can still be seen.

After a short walk through the dry rainforest at Mount Etna Caves National Park, my friend and I took the more challenging track to the summit of Mount Etna, named after the famous volcano in Sicily. This short, but steep track heads uphill via a set of stairs, before descending on the northern side to a narrow cleft in the limestone cliffs known as Bat Cleft. The razor sharp limestone rocks were amazing to see, as were the views from the summit of Mount Etna.
