The Savannah Way is a 3,700 km route linking Cairns in tropical north Queensland to the historic pearling town of Broome in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. The route follows a mix of sealed and unsealed roads across the north of Queensland at the Gulf of Carpentaria, before continuing on through the Northern Territory and the Kimberlies. The route is best done in the dry season (May - October) as roads can be closed during the wet season.

On this trip, my friends and I travelled much of the Queensland section of the Savannah Way, driving from Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula to Chillagoe, Karumba and finally to Lawn Hill Gorge in the south. The roads were easy to drive, although very narrow at times, and there were many interesting things to see along the way. The most interesting section for us was the Chillagoe to Mount Surprise unsealed roads. This section did require a 4WD to negotiate the dry creek crossings.
