The small town of Karumba is the only town to be located on the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Most other towns like the nearby Normanton are situated inland, due to the extensive tidal flats of the Gulf Country. The town used to be the port for the area, and later a refuelling and maintenance stop for the flying boats of Qantas Empire Airways. It is now a popular fishing destination and there is even a Barramundi Discovery Centre located south of the town that you can visit.
The Karumba Heritage Walk takes you through the town to Karumba Point. A boardwalk provides access across the mangrove tidal flats between these locations. My friends and I did part of this walk near Karumba Point where we stayed overnight. Note that this area has crocodiles, so swimming at the beach or in the river is prohibited.
