Hartley Historic Village
2.1 km (0.75 hrs )
This 19th century village features 17 historic buildings and provides an insight into one of the earliest settlements in inland Australia. There are quite a number of information panels outlining the history of the major buildings, with the highlights being the Greek revival sandstone courthouse (1837), the old Post Office (1846) and the two churches (1848 and 1857).
I have visited Hartley a number of times, but this was the first time that I took the two short walks that begin at the rear of the Post Office. The first was the Kew-Y-Ahn Bell Rock Heritage Walk which climbs to the tor overlooking the village, while the second is the Sculpture Walk that leads to the Talisman Gallery. This is a nice place to take a break when heading west, particularly if you are interested in Australian colonial history.
