Fort Bourke Stockade was built in 1835 as a depot and defensive fort by Major Thomas Mitchell during his exploration of the region. The fort was named after Governor Bourke and it was the only fort ever built by Australian explorers.

The present day replica was built in 1983 and is located on the banks of the Darling River near the Eight Mile Lagoon wetlands. Access to the area is via a dry weather only unsealed road that runs off Louth Road, approximately 18 km south of Bourke. Keys to the locked access gate can be obtained from the Back o’ Bourke Information and Exhibition Centre.
