Bourke was established in 1862 along the banks of the Darling River. The town rapidly grew into a busy river port, with paddle steamers shipping large quantities of stock and wool south to Echuca, from where the railway then took them to Melbourne. With the arrival of the railway in 1885, reliance on the river trade to the south was quickly replaced by the more direct rail access to Sydney.

Bourke has a number of historic sites that I explored on my afternoon walk around town, including the Court House (1900), Post Office (1880), Fitzgerald's Post Office Hotel (1888), Old London Bank Building (1888), Telegraph Hotel (1875) and Train Station (1885).
