Walhalla was founded as a gold-mining town in late 1862, and at its peak was home to around 4,000 residents. The town was named after a gold mine in the area, which in turn had been named for the German hall of fame, the Walhalla Temple. Situated at the base of a steep valley in south east Victoria, the beautifully preserved town features a number of historic buildings, guided tours of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine (the most productive former gold mine in the area) and the nearby Walhalla Goldfields Railway, that my brother enjoyed riding while my friend and I explored the town on foot.
I very much enjoyed my visit to Walhalla. The town is even more picturesque and interesting than the New South Wales equivalent in Hill End.
