Hanging Rock is a prominent rocky outcrop in the Macedon Ranges formed by a volcanic eruption. Hanging Rock was purchased in 1857 and developed for use as a pleasure resort, complete with horse racing, a cricket oval and tennis courts. The site remains popular to this day as a place to enjoy a picnic. Perhaps synonymous with Hanging Rock is the Australian novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock. This fictional account tells of a group of schoolgirls who went missing during their picnic at this location in 1900. There is a visitors centre at the base of the rock with displays including information about the story and the subsequent movie.
The main attraction for me was the Summit Walk. This short trail departs from the visitors centre and visits 20 points of interests as the track heads to the summit. There are some nice views from the top, but take care to stay on the path as it is actually quite easy to become lost in the maze of rocks!
