Lake Mountain

★★☆☆☆
Lake Mountain is a 1,433 m high peak, located near the Yarra Ranges National Park, approximately 120 km north east of Melbourne. The Lake Mountain Alpine Resort caters to cross country skiing, with access to 37 km of trails in the adjacent national park. It is the most popular ski resort in Australia due to its close proximity to Melbourne. The resort is much quieter in summer, although popular with road cyclists due to the challenging climbs up to the resort.
There are a number of short walks located near the summit of Lake Mountain, two of which I visited. The first was the short 0.6 km Leadbeater's Track, which has interpretative signs along the boardwalk, highlighting the impacts of both the 1939 and the 2009 fires on the Lake Mountain plateau. The second, longer 2 km walk was to the summit, with a number of lookouts providing views of the alps and Marysville along the way. You can also extend this to the 5 km Summit Loop, which adds a few more lookouts.
