Ned Kelly Raid Trail

★★☆☆☆
Jerilderie is the only town in NSW that has connections with Ned Kelly and his gang, being the site of their February 1879 raid. In spite of a vow by the NSW Police that he would never cross the border, Ned Kelly and his gang not only crossed the border, but relieved the Bank of NSW in Jerilderie of over £2000, chopped down telegraph poles to prevent news of their holdup, locked the local police in their own cells, booked up the cost of shodding their horses to the NSW Police whilst parading in police uniform, held over 30 hostages and shouted the bar in, all in a period of three short days.
Jerilderie’s Ned Kelly Raid Trail is a self-guided tour of the 16 sites visited by Ned Kelly and his gang in during that weekend in 1879. Six of the buildings associated with the 1879 raid are still standing, providing insight into how the town looked when Ned Kelly visited. The trail is an enjoyable and educational way to explore Australia’s bushranger history, with all of the sights having information signs with details of that fateful weekend.
