I am fascinated by lighthouses. These beacons of the sea dot the coastline of Kangaroo Island, and I was able to visit three of the four lighthouses while circumnavigating the island, as well as visiting the Cape Jervis Lighthouse on the mainland.

Cape Jervis Lighthouse was built in 1972 and replaces the earlier lighthouse that was built in 1871. This lighthouse guides ships through Backstairs Passage, between Kangaroo Island and the mainland.

Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse was constructed between 1906-1909 to warn ships of the underwater reef with and two islands – the Casuarinas (The Brothers), located off the south western coast of the island.

Cape Bourda Lighthouse was built in 1858, and is the only square stone lighthouse in South Australia. A small cannon located near the lighthouse was originally installed to be fired during fog to signal ships of danger, as well as being a deterrence to invasion from possible enemy ships. It still fires each day at 1 pm.

Cape Willoughby was the first lighthouse to be erected in South Australia in 1852, and lights the Backstairs Passage between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. This lighthouse is a popular tourist destination and offers tours of the lighthouse.

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed touring the beautiful Kangaroo Island. There are many fascinating places to visit and see and we had a great two days.
