Frenchman's Rock is the name given to the rock inscribed by the members of Nicolas Baudin's 1803 expedition while they stopped at Kangaroo Island to replenish supplies. The expedition had set out to map the coast of Australia in the ship Le Geographe. Baudin and his crew stayed for 3 weeks and during that time, he mapped the island and collected flora and fauna specimens. Baudin and his men inscribed the rock to mark their visit - 'Expedition of discovery by Commander Baudin on the Geographe 1803'.

While the original rock is now located in the Visitor Information Centre in Penneshaw, a concrete replica can be seen under the dome that was constructed in 1906 to protect the rock from the elements.
