★★★☆☆
Benjamin Boyd built Boyd's Tower as a lighthouse in 1847. Failing to obtain approval for its use from the government, the tower instead became a whale spotting platform for the whaling industry until the 1920s when it then fell into disuse.
The 23m high sandstone tower is one of the many structures erected by Boyd as part of his ambitious, commercial enterprises, which included whaling, pastoralism, financial and maritime pursuits. Other structures can be see in the nearby Boydtown. Boyd fled to California in 1849 to escape his mounting debts, but the tower with the prominent inscription remains to this day as a testament to his dreams.
