Old Paney Homestead is thought to have been built in the 1870s by pastoralist William Crawford. The sheep station is named after the native word meaning hill spring and thrived in the early years, but drought, rabbits and dingoes, as well as depressed prices for wool changed Crawford's fortunes in later years. The former homestead is located on the Old Paney Scenic route in the southern section of Gawler Ranges National Park. There are a number of information signs in the house and surrounding fenced yard, which provides a glimpse into the history of the area.

There are short walks to the nearby Police Well and Stone Dam, while camping is available at Waganny Campground to the east or Yandinga Campground in the west.
