Situated within the Goldfields region, the town was established in the 1890's after the discovery of gold nearby. Mining is still a major industry in the area, with one of the gold mines below Beacon Hill visible on this tour. There is also evidence of early mining that can be seen on the Beacon Hill Walk.

The Beacon Hill Walk is a short walking track that on the summit of the hill overlooking Norseman. A number of information signs describe the history of the area, as well as the geology and flora. The track is well marked and ther are are chairs along the way to sit and enjoy the views.
