Albany’s Historic Whaling Station was the last operating station in Australia, operating for 178 years, from 1800 to 1978. The former station is now a museum and tourist attraction, with exhibits on whales and the industry that whaling supported. You can wander through the cutting up deck, Oil Filtration Plant, Whale Processing Plant, Whale Oil Tanks, Skeleton Shed and take a tour on board the Cheynes IV, the world’s only preserved Whalechaser ship.

I spent a fascinating number of hours at the whaling station, immersed in the interesting displays. I especially enjoyed exploring the Cheynes IV and the visit to the Regional Wildflower Garden and Australian Wildlife Park, located next door.
