Rouse Hill Estate
Rouse Hill, NSW
1.5 km (1.5 hrs )
★★★☆☆
Rouse Hill was established by Richard Rouse (Colonial Superintendent of Public Works and Convicts at Parramatta) in 1813 on a grant of land in Sydney's west. It was continuously occupied by the one family, before being acquired by the NSW government in 1978.
The former estate is much smaller in size today, but retains a glimpse into the early colonial life in Australia. The site features a Visitor Centre with information on the estate, Aboriginal history, early colonial life and significant events that took place here including the Battle of Vinegar Hill. The centre also has numerous activities, especially Lego for children to play with. The highlight is a visit to the Rouse Hill House and outbuildings, many of which can be explored, as well as the former Public School, faithfully restored to a day in the life of a pupil in 1889. I spent a wonderful Sunday morning exploring this interesting historic site.
