Rennix Trail

Grade 3 Grade 3

Kosciuszko NP, NSW

★★★☆☆

Rennix Trail is located in the subalpine section of Kosciuszko National Park. The lower altitude means a lot more variety in vegetation along this walk, with montane forests, a large bog of Sphagnum moss, subalpine meadows, forests of snow gums and granite boulders. The trail begins close to Rennix Gap, named after the engineer who was responsible for the construction of the Kosciuszko Road between 1906 and 1909. Rennix was caught in a blizzard here, a reminder of being prepared for changes in weather, even in summer.

Rennix Trail is a management road (just two ruts), which is easy to follow to the destination at Giants Castle, a series of large granite boulders perched on top of a mountain overlooking the Snowy River. A trig station and radio reflector are located atop the boulders. There are also some fine views of Island Bend dam and the site of the former township from there.
