With snow falling on my third day in Kosciuszko National Park, I decided to make the most of this rare summer event and head out to Blue Lake for a walk. The walk to Blue Lake along the Main Range Track is well defined and easy to follow, and it did not take me long to reach the lookout. By this stage the snow began to fall quite heavily, soon blanketing the ground with a thin layer of white.
With most of the day still ahead of me and a forecast of clearing skies, I decided to continue up to Mount Twynam, the third highest peak on mainland Australia at 2,168 m. By the time I reached the summit, the snow had stopped, the clouds had cleared and the sun was shining with clear blue skies. Having always wanted to do the section between Mount Twynam and Illawong Lodge, I took the opportunity to explore this section of Kosciuszko National Park. This is an off track walk, with only the faintest of footpads visible. It was a beautiful descent down to the Snowy River, with lots of wildflowers, especially silver daisies, along the way.
The final part of the walk was looping back to Charlotte Pass via the Snowies Alpine Walk (Guthega to Charlotte Pass). This new walk was easy to follow and provides a convenient link allowing for the loop walk.
