The Bungonia Slot Canyon is Australia's deepest limestone canyon, with the near vertical walls soaring 300 m above the creek bed. The stunning views from the canyon floor are unlike any other that I have seem. This track is one of the most challenging hikes that I have done, with a 400 m steep descent and ascent, giant, house-sized boulders to clamber over and under and limited track markings as you follow Bungonia Creek. All that aside, it was a must do walk for me, and I am grateful that I was finally able to tick this one off my list.
The track through the Canyon is marked as the 'Red Track', with the David Reid Carpark and picnic area the best access point. There are toilets, picnic tables and barbecues at the picnic area. The track is best done in a clockwise direction, as this will assist when negotiating the giant boulders towards the end of the slot canyon. There were at least two places where it would have been difficult, if not impossible to climb up if doing the track in the reverse direction.
