Lake Yarrunga
Tallowa Dam, NSW

★★★★★
Lake Yarrunga was formed when Tallowa Dam was constructed in the 1970s. The lake is at the intersection of the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Rivers and is an amazing place to canoe or kayak. The canoe launch area for Lake Yarrunga is at the first of the two picnic areas. There are tables and toilets located adjacent to the boat ramp.
There are three options for kayaking on Lake Yarrunga. The first is to head up the Shoalhaven River, through the magnificent gorge. Most people do this 30 km return option as an overnight paddle, and there are 9 designated campsites along the way (2 with toilets). The other two options are to head up the Kangaroo River to Bundanoon Creek and Beehive Point (14+ km return) or a one-way trip to Bendeela (21 km). I opted to paddle up the Shoalhaven River on this trip, but am already planning to return to do the Kangaroo River option next.
