The Port Arthur Historic Site is a fascinating place to explore, showcasing the history of one of Australia's largest penal settlements. From its origins as a timber station in 1830, the site grew to become a large complex housing some of the worst convicts in the British Empire (usually those who had reoffended upon arrival in Australia). The penal settlement operated from 1833 to 1877, before it became the township of Carnarvon. The site later was developed for tourism and conservation of the historical structures.
You can easily spend a day or more at Port Arthur, exploring the many historic buildings and delving into their fascinating history. This was my second visit to the site and I thoroughly enjoyed the return visit.
