The Putta Bucca Wetlands is an old quarry that has been transformed into a bird sanctuary. Located just north of Mudgee, the wetlands include 2 km of walking tracks along the Cudgegong River and water filled quarry, as well as a large picnic area, playground and garden. There are four tracks to choose from - the short Red Gum Trail along the Cudgegong River, the longer River Loop which follows the river north, Wetland Track along the western shore of the quarry lake and the short Turtle Island Loop around the pond with its long necked tortoises.

My friend and I combined three of the walks for a pleasant stroll through the wetlands. We did spot a few of the bird species from the two bird hides along the way, but did not see any of the tortoises.
