While most visitors to Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) come for the stunning gorge cruises, the national park offers a number of walks which give a different perspective to this incredible location. With time before our cruise, my friend and I took the shortest walk on offer - the Baruwei Loop.

The Baruwei Loop is a 5 km loop that heads along the Katherine River, before scaling the plateau via a long flight of stairs to the Baruwei Lookout, with its stunning views of the first gorge. From here you head south along the top of the sandstone plateau, then descend via the service trail through a narrow gap back to the Visitor Centre. The walk was interesting, especially with the many informative signs along the way. Note that it can get quite hot up on the exposed plateau, so be prepared.
