We had the opportunity to extend my work visit to New Zealand with a tour of the north island by the ubiquitous campervan.
Hiring a campervan in Auckland, we headed north to view the iconic Bay of Islands. Veronica loved peaceful Russel, but not as much as the seafood we enjoyed for our first night! Heading west, we visited the Kauri forests of Northland, before making the journey south to the Maori heartland of Rotorua. Here we were inducted into the Maori tribe with a traditional welcoming ceremony, an insight into the Maori culture and later topped with a traditional hangi.
The weather cleared just in time for us to be stunned by the magnificent colours of the geothermal wonderland of Waiotapu. From Rotorua, we drove south into the highlands, catching a glimpse of snow at Whakapapa, before the journey back, visiting the west coast and Mt Taranaki along the way.
