Broken Hill is the largest city in western NSW. It situated so far to the west, that it actually uses the South Australian time zone. The city was established in 1883 after the discovery of silver and lead. The orebody they came from proved to be the largest and richest of its kind in the world, earning Broken Hill it's nickname of 'Silver City'. The mining venture that was established as Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) has gone on to become one of Australia's largest companies.
The mining boom has endowed Broken Hill with some impressive historic buildings. A walk around the streets named after various minerals is a great way to appreciate what the city must have been like. A visit to the Line of Lode lookout provides and opportunity to see the city from above and learn more about the mines and the miners, some of whom sadly gave their lives in extracting the ores. A great way to complete a tour of Broken Hill is to head out to see the The Living Desert and Sculptures. This unique experience showcases what Broken Hill has also become famous for - it's various artists.
