Howes Trail
Yengo NP, NSW
55.6 km (3 hrs )
★★★☆☆
This was my third time driving Howes Trail through Yengo National Park. Located approximately 150 km north of Sydney, the 4WD track begins at the turnoff to Big Yango and follows the sandstone ridges to exit at Putty Road in the west.
Track conditions can vary greatly, with the track this time being far more challenging in places than I previously recall. A few sections required careful wheel placement and I bottomed out at one of the larger mud holes.
There are a number of interesting sites to the east, along the much easier to drive Yango Track, including the Finchley cultural walk with a number of rock engravings and the Finchley lookout, with its panoramic views to the west. Big Yango is also worth visiting. Access to the locked gate is via key code that is provided when booking camping at either of the two campgrounds.
