★★☆☆☆
Mountain Creek Campground is located approximately 12 km from Mount Beauty on Mountain Creek Road. The campground is situated on the southern banks of Mountain Creek and features grassed areas, picnic tables and toilets. Three short walks begin at the campground including the Shady Gully Walk (0.5 km), Tree Fern Walk (2 km) and Peppermint Walk (2.5 km). This is also the base camp for those attempting the climb to Mount Bogong - Victoria's highest mountain.
Mountain Creek Campground was where I had initially planned to stay overnight, so after selecting my campsite, I headed up Mountain Creek Road to do the Fern Tree Walk. This short walk follows Mountain Creek back to the campground, with a number of places to view the river along the way. There are indeed many fern trees along the way, providing for much needed shade on the hot (32 degrees) day. Arriving back early to camp, I decided to continue along the 4WD Mountain Creek Road and camp higher up, where it would be cooler. I ended up staying the night at Granite Flat, where the temperature was much cooler at the 1,430 m elevation.
