Mount Bogong (Big Fella in the local Aboriginal language) is Victoria's highest mountain, with an elevation of 1,986 m. There are three popular routes to the summit, all accessed from the nearby Mountain Creek Campground, located 12 km north of Mount Beauty.

Granite Flat is the trailhead for the shortest and easiest way to the summit of Mount Bogong. It is reached via the 4WD Granite Spur Track, a steep and narrow track that gains some 250 m in elevation (saving a lot of walking!). There is a small carpark and information board at the start of the trail, which heads quite steeply through the alpine forest. The track joins with Eskdale Spur, the second of the three routes, before climbing steeply to the plateau near the summit. There are magnificent views along Eskdale Spur, my favourite section of the walk. For those looking for more of a challenge, the Staircase is the most difficult of the three options to the summit. It certainly looked like difficult when I passed it!
