Oodnadatta Track

An iconic Australian 4WD track that had been on my bucket list ever since I purchased my 4WD in 2005. This incredible 20 day odyssey took us to some of the most remote and beautiful places in Australia.

The 4 adventurers were back ( dad, John, Boguslav and I - see Birdsville Track (Jan 2013) ) to follow in the path of the legendary Ghan railway and explore the arid interior of Australia.

We began our adventure by revisiting Mutawintji NP in the far west of NSW. Heading north, it was back to Cameron Corner, where 3 states converge (NSW, QLD, SA). Unfortunately heavy rain then forced us to reroute back to Broken Hill as the Strzelecki Track closed. It was a mad dash through the night in order to keep ahead of the heavier rain that was imminent!

Heading north on the Stuart Highway we visited Woomera, home to the world's largest rocket range, then on to Coober Pedy to explore the underground town. Crossing the border into the Northern Territory, we visited the awe inspiring Uluru and Kata Tjuta, the Henburry Meteorite Craters and the magnificent Rainbow Valley. We then spent an interesting day exploring the East MacDonnell Ranges, visiting both Trephina Gorge and N'Dhala Gorge before heading back to the Alice.

Heading west, we explored the West MacDonnell Ranges before a drive south to the magnificent Kings Canyon, where the weather cleared for a perfect day for our treck along the canyon's rim. It was then on to the legendary Oodnadatta Track, and having just reopened after the rain and flooding, we were the only vehicle on the journey south.

Oodnadatta lived up to its claim as the hottest town in Australia, with temperatures soaring to 46 degrees. This did not deter us from a grand tour of the remnants of the Ghan railway as we made our way south through William Creek to Maree. Having a few days to spare, we also squeezed in a tour of the Gammon Ranges, a walk through the gorge at Mount Remarkable, a visit to the former gold mining town of Walhalla and a drive through the Snowy Mountains.

A truly epic odyssey and one that we will long remember.
